Can I get a Student Grant?

If your permanent/home address is in New Whittington, Old Whittington, Sheepbridge, the east side of Whittington Moor and the Brushes and you are 19 years old or younger, you could be eligible for a small grant from the Webster Charity. Head over to the ‘Eligibility’ page and check out the requirements to see if you are eligible for a grant.

Did you know…

From the early 1960s to the 1990s, higher education in the UK was effectively free, as the state paid students’ tuition fees. There were no student loans and means-tested maintenance grants were available to cover living costs for many. In the 1960s just over one in 10 went to university, by the 1970s the number of 18-year-olds in higher education was between one in seven and one in eight. In the 1980s a massive expansion in higher education numbers saw the proportion of 18-year-olds increase to one in five by 1990. As a consequence of the increased number of students in higher education the funding for each student decreased significantly over the years. From 1998 the government introduced a new system of £1,000 means-tested up-front tuition fees, supported by loans. In 2004 the fees were raised to £3,000 and converted into loans repayable on an income-contingent basis after graduation but were still regarded as ‘top-up’ fees supplementing the state’s direct grants to universities. After 2010, the basis of university finance was radically transformed, as student fees were raised to £9,000, and largely replaced the teaching element in the state grants.

    1. Dear Ms Drummond,

Your grandson may apply for a grant through the website. There is an online form with instructions for its completion on the ‘Eligibility’ page. It is also possible to download a PDF version of the grant application form and complete that by hand and return a signed, validated copy, (signed by the student and course tutor), to the Charity by post before 21 October 2024. Kind regards, Chairman.
